Basics of 3D Printing for those who love cars!

This is an intensive 3 hour class designed to teach you the vocabulary necessary to understand the world of 3D Printing. During this class, students can expect to watch popular video, see a live 3D printer working, and get links to resources to print your own products. Here is a breakdown of each section, generally lasting about 30 minutes.

For our upcoming class, we will focus on automotive products, from plastics to metal, and include a brief discussion on laser metal sintering, and how it will dynamically affect auto design and manufacture.

A: Introduction to FDM Printing, understanding how the mechanics of a hot glue gun translate in an xyz plane into making an object. 

B: Discuss Resolution and what determines the resolution of a print, pass around samples.

C: What is filament? Why ABS shrinks more than PLA, discuss Shapeways samples, SLS Printing, Food Printing, Auto Printing.

D: Designing for 3D Printing: Supports/Rafts, HIPS, PVA, mm to inches, 3D Hubs, how to get stuff printed

E. Tools. Sandpaper, Tools, Finishing Options.

F: Thingiverse, trouble shooting, Reddit.com/r/3Dprinting, pros and cons and pitfalls of 3D Printing

G: Additional Materials
